The Motorship | Zvezda to build LNG Aframax duo for SCF

Russian shipyard Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex is to build the countrys first LNG-fuelled tankers under an order from Sovcomflot for two Aframax newbuilds.

The 114,000dwt ships will feature dual-fuel propulsion using LNG as the primary fuel. The 1A/1B ice-classed vessels will be built with financing from Vneshekonombank (VEB) and will operate under a 20-year time charter with Rosneft.

Sergey Frank, president and CEO, Sovcomflot, said: “We welcome the plans of Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex to create  modern large-capacity vessels using natural gas-based bunkers as their primary fuel. I’m sure that it is with such vessels that the future of merchant shipping lies.”
